Know Before is a general wellness tool, not medical advice

Know Before helps you compare dishes on a restaurant menu against a general nutrition goal you have chosen. That is all it does.

It does not diagnose, treat, cure, prevent, or manage any disease, condition, or symptom. It does not tell you what you should eat for a medical reason. It is not a medical device, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified health professional who knows your history.

No physician-patient relationship is created

Know Before was built by a physician, and we say so because the scoring rules reflect clinical training. Using Know Before does not make you anyone's patient.

Reading anything here, using the app, subscribing, or corresponding with us does not create a physician-patient relationship, does not constitute a medical consultation, and does not mean anyone has evaluated your individual health. No one at Know Before is treating you, monitoring you, or responsible for your medical care.

For advice about your own health, see your own clinician.

Our numbers are estimates

Except where we tell you a figure was published by the restaurant, every nutrition figure in Know Before is an estimate. We show estimates as ranges, with an indicator of how confident we are and a label showing where the number came from, because we would rather be honest than appear precise.

Portions vary. Kitchens vary. Recipes change without notice. Our estimates can be wrong.

Do not use Know Before for any decision where nutritional precision matters medically — including, but not limited to, insulin or medication dosing, carbohydrate counting for diabetes management, therapeutic diets prescribed by a clinician, or managing a diagnosed condition.

Allergies and intolerances — the most important limitation

Know Before's allergen and dietary filtering works by reading menu text and applying typical recipes. It cannot know what is actually in a dish.

It can miss hidden ingredients, shared fryers and cross-contamination, unlisted substitutions, regional or seasonal recipe changes, and anything the menu does not say.

If you have a food allergy or intolerance — particularly a severe one — always confirm directly with the restaurant before you order. Never rely on Know Before to keep you safe from an allergen.

Medications, conditions, and pregnancy

Know Before does not account for medications you take, medical conditions you have, or interactions between food and either. It offers no guidance for pregnancy or breastfeeding.

If a clinician has given you dietary instructions, follow theirs, not ours. If ours appear to conflict with theirs, theirs are the ones that know you.

If something is wrong

If you are having a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. Do not use this app, and do not wait.

If you have questions about your health, symptoms, or diet, talk to your physician, dietitian, or pharmacist.

Your decisions are yours

You are responsible for what you order and eat. Know Before offers information to help you choose; it does not make choices for you, and it cannot account for everything that matters about your health.
